Yulee RB Derrick Henry Runs Wild

From Justin Barney/Jacksonville.com

Yulee running back Derrick Henry broke one of the area’s oldest rushing records on Thursday night and didn’t even slow down to admire it.

There will be plenty of time later for reflection.

Henry broke former University Christian star Willie McClendon’s streak of 33 consecutive 100-yard rushing games during the Hornets’ 51-28 loss at Class 6A power Gainesville in Yulee’s season opener. Henry rushed for 336 yards on 31 carries, his highest rushing total since running for 360 yards in an Oct. 29, 2010 game against Interlachen.

Prospect – Derrick Henry c/o 2013

School: Yulee Hornets

Position: Running Back/Athlete

Size: 6‘3-HT., 241-WT.

40-Time: 4.54

Vertical: 38.5-inch

Stats: (2011) 2,610 rushing yards and 34 TD’s; (2010) 2,788 rushing yards and 39 TD’s; (2009) 2,475 rushing yards and 26 TD’s

Buzz: “Despite his obvious size advantage, Henry is not a player I would consider a power running back. He is a patient runner who anticipates well and has good vision. He is a graceful runner capable of making a subtle cut up field rather than exaggerated shake and bake moves. He has deceptive top end speed because of his long stride.” -Scott Kennedy/Scout.com

“The term “freak” is tossed around a lot in football recruiting circles, but Henry, who at 6-foot-3, 230-pounds ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, a 4.38 shuttle, posted a 38.5- inch vertical and had a 39-foot kneeling power ball toss at a recent Nike Combine- is just that.” -JC Shurburtt/247Sports.com

“You could end up seeing Henry as an H-back or on defense as a linebacker or defensive end.” -Bryan Fischer/CBSSports.com

“Derrick Henry, simply put, is one of the best athletes in the nation” -Barton Simmons/247Sports.com

1stCG Extra: Derrick Henry aka “Shocka” is with out a doubt the best prospect on the 1st Coast. He is built like a young lion and runs as smooth as a gazelle. Henry is a patient runner with good vision. He is able to make good reads and knows when to hit the right gaps at the right time. Henry can be an elite athlete at any position at the D-1 level.

Derrick Henry’s Commitment To Georgia Surprises All

From Stephen Spiewak/MaxPreps.com

Yulee c/o 2013 RB Derrick Henry’s verbal pledge to Georgia last Friday night surprised both Bulldogs coaches and fans alike. It also shocked Yulee head coach Bobby Ramsay.

“It took me by surprise,” Ramsay said on Monday. “I think it was something that he and the other kids from this area (Bolles OL John Theus, Camden County Brice Ramsey) had talked about and maybe a couple days before. I expected them to be a school he certainly could end up at and could be down the wire for him. I didn’t expect him to make a decision so soon.”

When Ramsay spoke with Henry, it was clear to him that Henry felt comfortable in Athens. He bonded with Bulldogs assistant Bryan McClendon, responsible for Georgia’s running backs, the position Henry hopes to play.

“He kept telling me, Coach, it feels like home, where I want to be.'”

FloridaHSFootball Talks To QB Ryan McFarlin c/o 2014

From Joshua Wilson/FloridaHSFootball.com

Watching Jacksonville University Christian QB Ryan McFarlin at the Pro Impact tryouts last weekend, he just might be another Jacksonville area quarterback to keep a watch on in the 2014 class.

Why keep a watch on him? Technique is an important part of the game and that is what stood out for McFarlin during the tryout. If anything he could be an important factor for the Christians’ for the next three years and improve their chances dramatically to return to the playoffs after a few years absence.

When it comes to modeling his play, Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers are two quarterbacks that McFarlin looks up to.

OL Devon Williams Talk With 247Sports

From JC Shurburtt/247Sports.com

Offensive guard Devon Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) is a massive offensive line prospect that moved well enough at Under Armour Combine to at least put himself in the discussion for a BCS-level scholarship offer.

The 6-foot-4, 330-pounder displayed good flexibility for a player his size and also displayed good strength, bench pressing 185 pounds 25 times. He also, according to the coaching staff at the combine, was one of the most impressive prospects they’ve seen in the medicine ball toss, which measures strength and to a certain extent, explosiveness.
